Dear colleagues and fellow USW members,
On Tuesday May 22, your union filed an application for conciliation with the Ontario Ministry of Labour. Our request for the assistance of a conciliation officer to help resolve our differences with the Administration is meant to help spur more progress toward our first agreement.
This is a standard step in most labour negotiations once the bulk of issues have been resolved and only certain key issues remain unresolved. Requesting a conciliator is not unexpected in large, complex negotiations such as ours.
The union and the administration have requested that the Ministry appoint a senior conciliation officer who is familiar with the post secondary sector.
It should be noted that we have 8 more days of bargaining scheduled prior to June 30. We will continue working towards the resolution of the outstanding issues in direct bargaining with the administration. However we will use the services of the conciliation officer on some of those scheduled days. The process also allows the parties to set further dates with the conciliation officer if we think it useful at that time.

Show your support
Inside your newsletter was a “Queen’s works because we do” poster to show your support for staff. Please post this in your work area! Send a note to firstname.lastname@example.org if you have bulletin boards or other areas where you can post more of these. The posters raise visibility for the importance of staff achieving equity with other employee groups at Queen’s. As we move closer to achieving our collective agreement, it is important to show that staff are united behind our bargaining team in pushing for fairness, equity and respect for the work we do.
